Rhyl pupils rally to tackle climate change

A Rhyl school is boosting local biodiversity thanks to the green fingered skills of pupils.

Ysgol Dewi Sant pupils joined with Denbighshire County Council’s Countryside, Biodiversity and Climate Change teams to create new areas of trees and hedgerows on the school grounds.

Nearly 2,000 trees including individuals and hedgerow trees now have a new home at the school grounds.

The work is part of Denbighshire County Council’s school tree planting project which will see approximately 7,500 trees planted at county school sites to improve local biodiversity and increase carbon absorption.

Council staff are also working with other schools to enhance their outdoor areas to improve interest for children and wildlife whilst making sure pace for recreational play is preserved.

The schools include: Ysgol Bro Famau, Ysgol Bodnant, Prestatyn High School, Ysgol Melyd, Ysgol Esgob Morgan, Y Rhyl and Ysgol Penmorfa.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “This is fantastic work by Ysgol Dewi Sant, the pupils have done an extremely good job in helping improve the biodiversity on the school grounds.

“It is great to see such passion from the youngsters in getting involved in tackling climate change and inspires us to do more to support their future in the county.”
