South-West heat pump company Abode Heat wins award for its Cornish boathouse project

Renewable heat expert Abode Heat, is delighted to announce that it is one of the three winners in the Vaillant’s national Heat Pump Challenge.

The awards aim to recognise the most interesting heat pump projects in the UK, and are a chance for installers, like Abode Heat, to showcase how and when heat pumps work at their best. The Vaillant team has partnered with renowned British property expert and TV presenter, Kevin McCloud.

Abode Heat is one of the three winners, specifically for its Cornish boathouse project; Pedn Billy Boathouse. Located in Helford Passage, this detached traditional cottage was installed with an aroTHERM plus to replace the original direct electric heating system.

Ali Hodges, Managing Director at Abode Heat comments: “We are incredibly delighted to share the news that Abode Heat is one of the trio of winners in the Vaillant Heat Pump Challenge. We’re incredibly proud of our Cornish boathouse project and think it truly showcases the versatility that heat pumps bring to all types of properties. Being thatched and exposed to the elements and sea-water and air on the Helford River. Would mean a heat pump wouldn’t be the most natural solution, especially given it is a holiday home and would require ease of use for all visitors! However, through this project we have been able to show the efficiency and effectiveness of a heat pump solution with aroTHERM, and it has resulted in around a 66% reduction in running costs than the boathouse’s previous electric system, which we are proud of.”

As an installer winner, Abode Heat has had the chance to film with Kevin McCloud already – alongside the homeowners – to really showcase the potential and benefits that heat pump technology has for all building types as the UK embraces a lower carbon future. When commenting on the winning properties, Mark Wilkins, Technologies and Training Director at Vaillant, told the heat pump industry: “Selecting just three winners was a difficult task, as every entry we received truly pushed the boundaries to show what is possible with heat pump technology. Now we’ve selected the three winning properties, work is already underway behind the scenes to create some standout video case studies that tell the story behind each installation from the point of view of the homeowner and installer. This way we’re confident we can support even more homeowners to better understand how low carbon technologies, such as heat pumps, can work effectively in their homes.”
