Denbighshire supports United Nation’s climate change conference

Denbighshire County Council is holding free online events as part of the COP26 Climate Change Conference.

COP26 is the United Nation’s annual climate change conference which is being hosted by the UK, together with Italy, in Glasgow between October 31 and November 12.

During this period Denbighshire County Council will be highlighting climate change through its social media and hosting online events.

This includes an online event for businesses, Business Breakfast – Denbighshire for Climate, on November 9 which will provide information on the support available to help businesses contribute to the climate change agenda.

The Council will also hold a Becoming a Carbon Zero Community in Denbighshire webinar on November 1 including a speaker from the Centre for Alternative Technology and a climate and ecological change resource pack will be created for schools to use during the fortnight.

In 2019 the Council declared a climate change and ecological emergency which included a commitment to make the authority net carbon zero by 2030 and enhance biodiversity across the county.

The Council’s Climate and Ecological Change Strategy was adopted in 2021.

Cllr Brian Jones, the Council’s Lead Member for Waste, Transport and the Environment, said: “We are supporting COP26 by raising awareness of climate change during the conference so members of the public and businesses can get all the information they need to help contribute.

“This includes events for the public and businesses and we have produced resources for schools.

“The Council has a number of projects to help reduce carbon emissions and increase biodiversity here in Denbighshire under our Climate and Ecological Change Strategy.

“These include improving electric vehicle infrastructure and creating woodland and wildflower meadows in the county.

“The Council has already reduced carbon emissions from our buildings and fleet and now only use renewable electricity in our buildings after switching to a renewable only energy provider for schools, leisure centres, libraries, council offices and depots.”
